A wood fence is still the default in Grayson County, and for good reason. It is the cheapest way to get a genuinely private back yard, it looks right against the brick and stone that dominates local housing, and when a section gets damaged you replace boards rather than a whole run.
What separates a wood fence that stands straight in ten years from one that leans in four has very little to do with the pickets everyone looks at. It is almost entirely about what happens below ground.
The ground is the whole problem
Grayson County sits across a soil boundary. The Blackland Prairie brings deep, dark, heavy clay with a very high smectite content — the same mineral family responsible for the foundation problems North Texas homeowners know well. Push west and north and you move into the Eastern Cross Timbers, where the uplands are sandy loam over a clay subsoil. These two behave nothing alike, and they sit within a few miles of each other inside this county.
Clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries out. Through a wet March and a dry August, that is a large volume change, and it happens in the top few feet of soil. A post set only into that layer gets gripped and worked on twice a year, every year. It does not fail suddenly. It leans a little, then a little more, and by year four or five the run is visibly out of plumb.
The fixes are unglamorous and they work:
- Set below the active layer, not to a generic depth pulled off a national guide. Frost is irrelevant here — frost depth in this part of Texas is a matter of inches, and quoting a frost line is a tell that the content was written somewhere colder.
- Bell the bottom of the hole so the footing is wider at the base than at the top. Clay can push a straight-sided concrete plug upward. It cannot easily lift a footing shaped like an anchor.
- Crown the concrete at the top so water runs away from the post instead of standing against it.
Where wood fences actually fail
In rough order of how often we see it:
- Post movement from clay. The lean. Covered above.
- Rot at the ground line. A wood post is buried in damp soil for its whole life. Cedar resists this far better than pine, and a steel post sidesteps it completely.
- Warping pickets. North Texas summers are hard on wood — intense UV and very low humidity after long damp spells. Cedar stays flatter than pine.
- Sagging rails. Span rails too far and the middle drops, taking the pickets with it.
- Gates. Nearly every failed gate traces back to a hinge post set no deeper than a line post. A gate is a lever, and it works on that post every single day.
Cedar, pine, or a hybrid
Cedar is the better wood here. It resists rot and insects without chemical treatment, stays straighter through the summer, and takes stain properly. Treated pine costs meaningfully less and makes a perfectly good fence, but it arrives wet, moves more as it dries, and needs patience before it will hold a finish.
The option worth considering seriously is the hybrid: steel posts with cedar pickets. It costs more on day one and removes the failure mode that kills the most wood fences in this county. If you plan to be in the house a while, run the numbers on it.

Two approvals can apply, and they are separate. Your city sets height limits, setbacks and whether a site plan has to be filed. Your HOA, if you have one, sets style, colour, height and often which direction the finished side faces — and an HOA can enforce rules the city does not care about at all.
